Recently, I've seen a few higher level players play a lot of Water Sprites in their opening. This seems counterintuitive to me, since while Water Sprites may be great tanks and have a good net output, they can end up accomplishing little if playing into board control or heals, or can lock a player into forcing moves.
I rarely play Water Sprite offensively, and when I do, it will often be in later game scenarios and never more than 2.
In what situation would you want to open with 3 Water Sprites?
I have replays if people want some cases where Water Sprites have been played against me. They resulted in harsh losses, but I'm sure the players had reasons for playing them?

Vampire (especially vampire 5), elephant, earth 4

Vampire (especially vampire 5), elephant, earth 4 Isn't it still a risk to play them with an elephant? What if there's removal against the elephant?

There is always some degree of risk in this game, duh

If they had not the vampire class probably they have not so high lvl, I think 3 sea sprites can be playable also with a death7 bluff.

I remember one of the very few game I watched in which Plynx did play 3 Sprites vs Illusion ... that was amazing. Can't remember his/her class btw now ... mm75

Sea Sprite opening represent a need for high board control and mana stockpiling, at the cost of a direct life disadvantage (and, less importantly, rather low board value - you won't usually be able to force your opponent to focus on killing the Sea Sprites).
I will play a few of these gals early on if I have good healing (particularly A4, Ch1, or E4; occasionally E1), and am confident that my opponent doesn't have efficient clears (W8 being the most efficient clear there is). But I will try to mix it up with other creatures unless it is extremely important that I stockpile all of my other mana - losing 6 life per turn early on without replenishing some of it is going to force you to make moves later on that you'd rather not make.

As a rule, never play early Sea Sprites unless you posses Air 5 - that can be a fatal counterplay against the Sprite. But I'm sure we are all aware of that already. Also be wary of Water 7, that hurts as well.
I, in my limited amount of matches, have found it somewhat useful to play Sea Sprites unopposed when I have already a couple of unblocked creatures on the board. It will force the opponent into the decision of whether to block the Sprite or other creatures - it can add pressure, as in a rush. If you have the Life advantage & the opponent has poor direct damage or healing, the Sea Sprites can keep them quite occupied, leaving you room to go in for the kill. The other option is to use the Sprite as a sort of Ice Golem - play it when the opponent wants to cast a sweep or clear. The Sprite will survive to attack directly. It can also help to have an Earth 1 on your team to help calm the Sprite down a little. To play Sprites defensively is tricky - you do not want to uselessly stall while the Sprite drains your Life, helping out your opponent. Their must be an advantage to the play.

I often find sprites to be an awesome play when you are playing time, often you will finish your opponent before the life drain affects you, I'm sure the same concept can work with other rush classes as well.

In what situation would you want to open with 3 Water Sprites?
It really depends on your class, and your opponent's class too, and the strategy you need to employ. The sea sprite can be a great play. A good opening sprite strategy can rely on you knowing, or at least having a good idea of, your opponent's early card options. If their creature draw sucks, and if their clear spells are poor or not readily available, your sprites can overpower the opponent when combined with a sweep for some devastating slot breaks. This can give you a nice head start. Toss in a minotaur or an orc chief and things will speed up. Overwhelm the opponent before they can get any traction... Course you want to keep an eye on your healing options, as well as your opponent's. |
