Haven't played in a couple months and so I just updated to version 1.3 via the in-game download. Fine, that all worked. Then, it said it would restart the game. I told it to proceed and then it wigged out.
Now it will not open the game. When I try to do so I get an error box saying "Cannot open file "C:\Program Files\Spectromancer\images\splash\sbtn1.jpg". The system cannot find the path specified.
Now, I changed NOTHING. I let the game update itself. Now it can't find necessary files. Any ideas on how to make it work?

Now when I try to activate (got it working without the greenhouse executable) it won't let me type the letters I need to input my activation codes. It only accepts a handful of the letters in our alphabet...
Have you tried using the executable straight from spectromancer.com?
I had the same issue once and I think that's how I fixed it.

Thanks for the input Silbe. I got it to run using the executable from here, but it still won't let me type the letters I need to input my activation code, which is from Greenhouse.

i have the same issue, have a playgreenhouse code but i can't active the 1.3 game

Again, I have the same issue. I've tried reinstalling the 1.02 version and entering the code there but no luck, it just prevents me from typing or inserting most of the alphabet. I've installed and re-downloaded and re-installed the 1.03 version, and whether I get Spectromancer from this site, or from another, the result is still the same.
So I came upon this page while trying to solve this exact issue. I couldn't find any information elsewhere on the net, but I managed to fix it myself.
The image file that seems to be missing is part of the window that pops up when you start the game, asking you to choose whether you want to play full screen or windowed mode. It has a box you can un-check if you don't want the window to appear each time you start the game.
The way you fix this is:
1. Uninstall whatever version you have installed. 2. Download and install the current greenhouse executable (1.02h) 3. Run the game, and when the window pops up, uncheck the box after making your choice. 4. Upgrade in game by connecting to the multiplayer server. 5. Restart the game. It should go directly into the main game screen with updated version (1.03)
Hope this helps.
Also, you can't use the greenhouse activation code with a non-greenhouse executable. So there is no point going down that road. KensouFinrod | 2009-10-17 20:27:40 |
Hi, may you help me? I have successfully downloaded the version 1.03 to my computer. When I run it, it seems to be loading the game, but it never starts. I don't know who long it takes to start. Am I doing wrong?
Help me please, thanks

Actually since upgrading my computer I've run into this same bug.. plus its stuttery during gameplay now, and seems to get minutely worse each duel (after a dozen or so duels it was so lurching it was almost painful to watch). Since I get the "lost sbutton.jpg" error I can't even open the launcher to see if running it in windowed mode would help. Are there any command line parameters to force it into window mode, or stretch-to-resolution?

I'm also encountering the lost sbutton.jpg error. Like LazerBrain, my game also seems to run more poorly in the default mode the game is giving me. I'd reinstall to try to fix it that way, but I'm worried about running out of valid uses for my purchased key. Is there such a limit? I've had a lot of computer trouble lately, so I've had to reinstall things a lot. Is this a problem with the greenhouse version of the game? It seems you can manually change video modes by editing the "game" file in the main spectromancer directory. I changed vidmode from 0 to 1 and it looks a little better now. It didn't solve all of the performance issues, but its an improvement. If you want to play in windowed mode, you can enter 5 as the vidmode. Note that there are actually two "game" files in the main spectromancer directory. The one to change is a fairly small file, and vidmode is the top option there. And you should make a backup of the file before you edit it, of course. Modified by Kaylee on 2009-10-28 02:42:24 LazerBrain | 2009-10-28 03:44:55 |
Thanks.. I've actually got it running really nicely now, though I can't remember what I did. Will try really hard to though.
Oh though I do still have the Sbutton problem.
