- Unfortunately Spectromancer is not a game I could recommend to anyone. This forum is the best sign what kind of a game this is. Mods here actually edit your post so it is even worse then forums that delete your posts when they do not like what you have to say. I bet that troll also will ban you from the game with no consequence. - The game costs more on PC then on ipad and it was a PC game first?! So instead of rewarding PC gamers that allowed them to earn money in the first place they actually do the opposite.
- They sell expansions that you do not even have to buy to have a full game
- They said ( lied ) how they are working on an android version but that is never going to happen.
- Wide screen support , some thing that games older then 10 years have is not something they want to add to this game.
- Mute chat option is also to much work for them.
- The game actually has DRM so it limits how many time you can install the game?!
- Developers / publishers do not want to invest not even 2 bucks in promoting this game.
Hearthstone on the other hand is a complete joke. It is a rigged game ( card draw, classes you face, starting hand.. it is all rigged ) and it is a big time pay to win game. So the answer to the title is neither.
I guess the best thing would be to wait for Faeria card game and hope it is going to be a good game.

Investing time in gaming is brainless nonsense, since life is short and each rebirth is hard...invest time only in your Karma and nothing else!
In your freetime do whatever you want as long as you don''t hurt others...Spectro is a nice way to relax... Modified by StephanieF on 2014-10-06 20:55:08 Wavelength | 2014-10-06 20:55:22 |
Part of the reason this game hasn't seen much promotion (which is really a shame, I agree) is because it was entirely made by like three or four people, and I believe they're based out of Belarus. So between the small team size, long distance, and language barrier, I imagine it's a little harder for them to promote Spectromancer in "the West". The small team size is probably also responsible for the delay on the Android version and the lack of certain features like widescreen. With that being said, as an avid player of both Spectromancer and Hearthstone, I will say it outright: I think Spectromancer is, by far, the better game. You said you were tired of the huge effects of luck and imbalances in Hearthstone - these problems can be found in most TCG-style games, but Spectromancer has managed to basically get rid of them with an extremely clever "permanent cards" mechanic. The way Spectromancer works is that, rather than customizing and choosing a deck, you are dealt 20 cards at the beginning of the game from a fairly limited pool of about 56 possible cards, and you can play these creatures or spells at any time if you have the mana to do so. None of the "basic element" cards have any RNG features whatsoever (like HS's Mad Bomber, Mindgames, or Ragnaros), and only 4 of the 16 classes (Forest, Golem, Chaos, and Goblin) have random elements, so in most games, luck has zero impact once the initial draw has been made. The small pool of cards seems limiting at first, but what it allows you to do, once you get experienced with Spectromancer, is to figure out what cards the opponent might be hiding, and to counter those cards before they can even play them. It's a fantastic, strategic element that can really only be gained by not having customized deckbuilding, and I like to think of it as Chess meets MTG meets Poker. People using the PC and people using the iPad can play with each other and join the same global lobby. I think you do need to pay for each version individually, if you want to play it on both platforms. I can't speak for the developers, but I assume the iPad version was made cheaper because iPad games generally run chepear than PC games. But, having played over 15,000 games of Spectro without it getting boring... I can say it is well worth the money!! You can give the free version (only one class and limited plays per day) a try before buying the game, if you're on the fence. Spectromancer has a healthy player base, and a much kinder one than you'd find in HS or most other very large games. I've found the community to be full of really good, intelligent people from all over the world. It is also a growing community - back in 2009 when the game came out, it could be hard to find a match. These days, there are usually 50-100 people on at any given time of the day or night, and finding someone to play against is no problem.

That sounds good. You should post that on metacritic, Reddit, Steam review page etc. Gamers can promote the game them self.
I will buy the game but it really does suck that the same game costs more on a PC. A lot of people will not like that. Also i see it is an old game so it was out on PC first. It should be cheaper there. And i see no reason why you should buy separately the game for ipad.
Hearstone has a big influence and every small detail counts. Some Hearstone fan will say " I can play HS with the same account on PC and ipad" even though this game is so much cheaper. In HS for 20 bucks you get like 20 packs or something.
Did developers say anything about adding widescreen support and android version?
This is a great time for this game because a lot of people will get tired of all the stuff in Hearstone and will want some other card game to play. Cristofer | 2014-10-06 21:58:47 |

Thanks... I definitely should post a couple reviews at places like Steam, good idea. Did developers say anything about adding widescreen support and android version?
I believe the devs have said they plan to create an Android version, but are busy with other things (such as player support and their work on other games) at the moment. I can't speak for widescreen. I can't answer your questions about Steam - I bought through the spectromancer.com website. Hopefully someone who plays this on Steam can answer for you!
If i buy this game trough steam do i need steam to play it? Steam is not need for the game. You still can play spectromancer by launching it directly from the game folder locate in steam even if you logout from steam.
What steam does is +1 to your library (like a normal steam game ) , steam achievements and most important, your game cd key. Of course steam will not help you to update/patch your spectromancer. You have to do it manually by login to the online league.
If you want to purchase all the spectromacner content, buy the base game and Gathering of power expansion only will do.

Ok.
Hearthstone you have to pay money to get enough packs to be competitive, and from personal research ive found that on average people spend $250 in packs... of course theres loons out there that want a full golden collection... from various tests, people have concluded that it takes around 670 dollars to unlock all the collection in non golden version... which to me personally is INSANITY.
Spectromancer might be for those stronger in will and mind, while Hearthstone is better suited for people with lower IQs looking for a more casual gaming experience.
I play both, so im not talking out of my ass.
That is all true. but this game needs more advertisement. why are you people doing nothing? post on metacritic, reddit, twiter, youtube, post on hearstone forum and every hearstone video / stream that people should try out this game.
this game could be huge if only people knew about it.

StephanieF, you really shouldn't encourage that. You have a player who does nothing but spam the hearthstone forums on your behalf. His favorite trick is to call everyone who calls him down for his spam, fagots. I'm sure that you don't actually want people like that representing you. No fault of yours (directly) but he's turning people away from your game left and right. No one wants to give your game a go, when your community represents itself like that.

this game could be huge if only people knew about it.
The game had a fair bit of hype back when it first came out, probably because of richard garfield's involvement. I think it only became a niche title because it was too hard for most players to understand what was good about it. People complained constantly about not being able to make their own decks, no matter how many times it was explained that that would be contrary to the core principle the game was built on.
The thing about competitive card games is that people have come to expect a pokemon element to it now. They WANT to collect things, even if it means they spend more money, and they want to design teams or decks or whatever before going in. It takes a person with a particular kind of patience to see why Spectro's system is great.
I'm not saying the game couldn't be bigger than it is if it had more of a marketing budget, but I doubt it would ever really get huge. It's just the way some things are. A lot of great artists never got recognized as great until after they died. Cristofer | 2014-10-07 11:58:14 |

With good marketing you can make a terrible game a popular one. This game is a great one so it could be huge. It does not need a marketing budget. It need people playing it to promote it. not exactly like that guy that was spaming about it, but even that is better then nothing.

Yes, but only if that terrible game has an element that easily hooks people, like card collecting, level grinding for fancy equipment, things like that that keep people deep in MMOs and such for years after they've really exhausted the gameplay.
I'm certainly in favor of trying to promote the game, I just think if you feel it can become as widely played as Hearthstone you're mistaken. I'm fine with it being a niche game, it has a very nice community. But more players is always a good thing.
I could probably put a couple articles on it out there that would at least see some amount of traffic. Claudob | 2014-10-09 04:16:01 |
I have offered to make the wide screen (long ago, 2-3 years ago). Developers (Cooler) answered that they very much want to do it, but can not yet. Reason (why can not), he did not explain.Modified by Claudob on 2014-10-09 04:18:18 Claudob | 2014-10-09 04:29:48 |
On the big screen could display an additional field where it will display gradually open card opponent. Now, this field is called an additional touch of a button and appears in place of the ground field. Then we need to press the button again to remove the opponent's field and return to the main field. It's uncomfortable. It distracts from the game. It will be good if the two fields will be displayed together. This will be useful for a wide screen.

Without any context in the beginning about the suggestions for Spectro and its marketing, this topic is just going to confuse people. If you feel that any specific suggestions (widescreen support, marketing, etc.) deserve more conversation, you may start a new topic for it.
I can't see the original "mod-edited" post so I can't tell who was right or wrong here. But I think anyone who pissed someone else off is partially responsible for causing this really good discussion to go off the rails, and that's unfortunate.
In the future, let's give other posters the benefit of the doubt - that goes for everyone, but I think doubly so for us mods.

The game has some problems like no wide screen support and some mods that have some mental problems but compared to Hearthstone it is great game. If the creators of this game do not want to invest 2 bucks to promote this game then why would I do that? If they want to feed these forum members that do nothing to promote the game ( my review on metacritic is still the last one ) then why would I promote their game?
Here are some easy ways to promote this game that they chose not to do ( ignorance, incompetence, etc. )
- 1. You pay to someone like Trump to promote the game for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eKGgGnk4Xg&;list=UUsQnAt5I56M-qx4OgCoVmeA. Of course most youtubers do not admit that they are paid to promote some game, but Trump is big in card games market so he is a good option. Also some people do appreciate his honesty about that.
- 2. Some streamers read donations so you can send a message to them to try out Spectromancer, I have also seen a comercial for a card game in between hearstone tournament matches.
- 3. making this a esport game would be a great thing.
- 4. having someone to regulary stream this game would mean a lot
- 5. Just posting about this game on different sites would be good.
To be honest, it is just incredibly stupid to ignore a good game you already have and waste your time and resources on making a new game. If they actually had some sense they would improve this game and promote it. The amount of money they could earn from it would be huge. With that, they could make an even better new game. ( personally, there is not even a need for a new game, since most people have never even played this one ).

All your suggestions are good and reasonable (maybe except 3 - it's kinda abstract). Quite strange that you think that "they chose not to do". which I think is completely wrong (although I appreciate your point, I don't want to dig into details). It's quite easy to talk about spending someone's else money and resources, but when you're talking seriously and ready to invest your own money and resources - there are MANY details you should consider. That's it! If you believe in your skills and knowledge - you're always welcome to invest something and make just another "Kard Combat", "Astral Battles" (both are licensed Spectromancer-based games). I have never heard about this game until recently. Even when I was looking for an alternative game for Hearthstone no one would mention this game. Yesterday I was talking to some MTG players and they also have never heard of this game. No one is streaming it on Twich. There is no Reddit for it. There is nothing.
I say that those in charge choose not to promote this game because I just can not comprehend what a bad job they are doing. You can promote this game even without money. Of course money does help. Problem is that you choose to spend it on a new game you are working on. That new game can wait. Spectromancer with a right push could dominate the card market.
About suggestion 3. I was watching Hearthstone tournament and there was a promotion between rounds for some new browser card game. The game is at alpha stage ( I had the opportunity to test it and it is a joke ) . Not only that. They are already pushing for that game to become an e-sport game like Hearthstone and are having a 10 000$ tournament.
I do not know how you push a game to become a e-sport but if any card game should be there then it is this one. Tournaments with such a big prize pool is something too much to ask, but 1000 bucks could be a start.
True, it is easy to talk about other people money and resources but it is not that easy for a lot of people to talk about where that money and resources should go. Problem is that you do not see the potential this game has. I doubt you have something against earning a ton of money and you could do that with this game. You do not need a new game to achieve that. After you earn that money you could create an even better new game.
Can I buy shares from this game? About my skills and knowledge - I do not have that knowledge to create a game but I sure do have one to see the good and bad stuff about the games I am playing. 99.9% of people are not able to see that.
I do not want to create my own game, I want to see this game improve and to play it and I want to play it against millions of other people and not only 40.
p.s. If you could play this game online unlimited number of times for free with a Spirit class could it be called a free to play game? Last thing i would want is to make this game into another garbage pay to win / grind to win free to play game but allowing people to play that one class as much as they want could be a good thing?
If that is enough to market this as a free to play game then that would be an auto advertisement on a lot of sites. Since you are still competitive and you have all the cards I doubt people would hate the game for it. It is not like people would say it is a pay to win game.

Be respectful of the developers wishes and expectations out of THEIR OWN GAME THEY MADE.
You are confusing your role, which is a mere PLAYER from what a PUBLICIST, MANAGER or DEVELOPER.
Its simple, if you did not make a game, you have no right to feel dissapointed with what is chosen to do with it, in your fantasy world, its just about "taking decisions" but in the real world, decisions take money, effort and manpower which you are not going to take the burden of, so please just shut it. If you are really this certain about what would "dominate the card market," why don't you create your own game and do exactly that? You seem to be an expert. With such infallible ability to see what will be the hottest game in town, you could be rolling in dosh by taking the initiative and putting something out there that you know will steal all the hearthstone players.
Just keep in mind that it is a whole lot easier to sit at the sidelines and tell other people what they should be doing than to actually take the risks and do it yourself. Cooler | 2014-11-04 06:34:54 |

So, can you explain why Kard Combat or Astral Battles don't dominate the market? You think HotHead don't know how to promote games too? Promotions tips aren't secret: everyone who attend gamedev conferences (or look for videos/presentations/articles) know what to do for promotion. But there are not many people who know how to do this effectively. And only few are successful in it. Everything is measured, and if you spend $1000 for something and get $200 back - you won't continue. If you spend 10 hours to do something and get $20 - you're probably on a wrong way and have better things to do. Some guys did cool promotion and have big success, but this doesn't mean that if you do the same - you'll be successful too. It's mostly not about what to do, but about doing right things in right place at right time. As I said, there are many details and randomness here (Flappy Bird wasn't famous for a long time). And you don't take into account that new game is 100 times easier to promote. Just because no one is interested in reviewing a 7-years old game. You may know, that Spectromancer is a sequel of Astral Tournament ( http://astraltournament.com). AT was developed and improved during some years, but then we said "Stop!" and made a new game. AT won't ever reach the success of Spectromancer, regardless of promotion. Cristofer | 2014-11-04 12:42:22 |

Kard Combat or Astral Battles? this is first time i hear about those games so their promotion is questionable. But I do not play ipad games or WIn phone games. Astral seems to be a win phone game?! So form a start it is at a disadvantage. Also it looks like a bad version of Spectromancer. Kard combat seems to be an iOS game only and it does not look that good. Those screen shakes when attacking would be enough for me to stop playing it. Spectromancer seems to be a much better game then those two and it definitely looks better.
It seems to me that you think how this game has reached it peak and how it makes no sense to invest in it or it promotion. That is completely wrong. If this game had promotion and if you fixed / improved some stuff it could become a huge success. Let me list some of the problems this game has. Some of those problems may seem irrelevant to you but every details important.
1. If I google for this game this site will be on first place. When i click on it the first thing i see is the video for this game. it is not a good one. " It takes some time to match players " ?! That is not what people want to see. They do not want to wait. matchmaking in this game is actually really good but for a first impression video that is a not a good one.
This game needs a proper trailer. Recorded in full HD and without in game music. That music is ok but kinda depressive. it does not lure you in to the game. And the first thing you should see in the video is " from the Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield we present to you..." or something like that. A lot of people have heard about MTG and it gives more credibility to this game.
2. Steam Spectro video is just plain and simple horrible. The game looks really bad on it. Terrible resolution, blury text and all. Recorded with a "potato" kind of video. At least use better quality video instead of that.
3. That DRM does not help also. I have never seen that kind of DRM on any other game.
4. There is no info on this site or Steam that I can try this game for free. Why is there not an obvious demo option?! I am not sure how that works, but if you could play for an unlimited amount of time for free with a Spirit class then could this game be called a free to play game? That would give you a free publicity on all those free to play sites.
Even if it was a limited game compared to Hearthstone where you can unlock everything for free ( if you play the game 24 hours a day for years ) it would not be hated since you get all the cards and you can be competitive. It would not be called a pay to win game and that is a big thing.
5. Buying this game is tricky. Why are there expansions that you do not even need in order to have a full game?! That is not a good thing.
6. PC version being more expensive then a iOS one is not a good thing also.
7. Having to pay for the same game two times if I want to play it on a ipad and PC is not a good thing also.
8. Abandoning android version is a terrible decision also.
9. Searching on Youtube for ios version from this game has ONLY ONE ok video?! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVEHYpy5NRs But even that one has bad resolution and is in russian. Still it is obvious that this game looks great on ipad. it is like the game was designed from the start for touch screen devices. But it needs a iOS trailer or more videos.
10. Metacritic has only 19 reviews for PC version. But I guess that is ok because it has a good overall score BUT iOS version has only one review?! As you can see for some people here it is no problem to come to this site to troll or post things that make no sense but actually doing something constructive is too much for them.
11. Those black borders on a side ( no wide screen suport ) in this game does not help also.
This game is from 2008. So I guess those in charge are thinking " this game is done, if it did not become more successful until now then that is not going to change, it is better if we work on some new game "
But they do not understand some things.
a. They did a terrible job when it comes to the promotion. People do not know about this game. Just because the game was out there for so many years means nothing. it is invisible to most people.
b. Hearthstone is out and that means a LOT for this game. Hearthstone made card games popular. People that never play card games have started playing it. What is also "great" about Hearthstone is:
- that it is a Pay to win / grind to win game and Spectromancer is not.
- Hearstone is a rigged game. Who goes first, card draw, what class you will face et. It is all rigged. and as far as I can see Spectromancer is not. There would be no reason for that since Spectromancer economy works differently.
- hearthstone is a non balanced game/ Spectromancer seems to be the opposite.
- hearthstone does not have a basic option like chat. Spectromancer does need a mute option though.
All that and other HS problems are great because people will want an alternative. Other card games on a market now are not that.
Faeria has some potential but that is still to be seen. I have tried all other digital card games and they all are no competition to this game.

Black borders in widescreen isnt big problem. But this game is really unknown. I created themes in forums of Hearthstone and many people never learn about this game. Streamers of HS to. No commercial and this game now is indi-game just like some closed club.
Changing this is very difficult. People dont understand how game of 2008 is good. But we can bring over them!
More themes in forum of Hearthstone, more messages in chat of Twitch Hearthstone, yeah!
We can... Or not?

You are probably the guy that got me in to this game then. Players them self can promote this game just like you did. Black borders and other stuff I listed if improved would help. Every detail counts. I know some people that are playing this game do not care about it and they are happy with it being a "closed club " game but this game deserves more. Yeah! I agree. HS is great, but it has some issues (serious and minor) and it's like am iceboat that we can use. That's exactly the reason why we're going to release Astral Heroes, which will be a good and competitive alternative for those who aren't satisfied with HS.
Can't comment all your suggestions (BTW, thanks for them - your opinion is really appreciated!), just some of them: 3. DRM - actually, I've copied UI layout/behavior and even wording from a popular DRM (AFAIK it was TryMedia) It was used in many games (mostly casual, but in large too, like rFactor). So it's strange that you've never seen such activation-based DRM.
4. There is a bold link labeled "DOWNLOAD", not "BUY". So it's quite obvious that it can be tried for free. Well, if it's not - we should change it.

We're posting on HS forums too, so maybe it wasn't Rinswind ;-) BTW, it's quite strange to see tons of spam on the HS forums (which is cleaned by moderators, but still...) On this forum there were no spam posts. StephanieF | 2014-11-04 19:18:46 |
Of course not, cause that (stupid too?) thing would delete them...
Btw Cristofer, we are not a "closed club", but yeah many do not care much (not even for Forum lol)... So, good and nice that you care even more (for them)...

It's not spam, it's only popularization of this game just like popularization of chess.
In russian forum of HS topic about this game was deleted only after one day so we talking about Spectromancer in 30 messages. In english forum topic is alive now but only one message. But there is new topics about Spectro in HS english forum, not of me.
My english is bad, I know.

Ok man. I guess I can just hope the looks and UI will be the same like in Spectromancer. No 3d cam angle like in magic the planeswalker and similar games or screen shakes and similar effects. And yeah, there really should be some more obvious info that you can try the game for free.

In all these years of me gaming and visiting forums I have never seen a worst forum then that one. Bilion dollar company and they have a forum full with spam.

He is not talking about Spectromancer posts there. He is talking about some "black magic " constant span on there. Their forum is a joke.
Ok people. That is it from me in regards to this topic for now. I hope Astral heroes will be a great game. Cooler | 2014-11-04 19:50:02 |

I mean real spam - automated (kinda "Buy V1agra click here cheap drugs pills med store online"), not Spectromancer discussion which is not spam at all (maybe offtopic). I have real spam on the Astral Tournament forum (finally I had to close that forum at all). Rinswind | 2014-11-04 19:53:42 |
